Melissa ISD Hires New Director of Bands, Kevin McNulty

December 17, 2024

Melissa ISD is excited to announce Kevin McNulty as the new Director of Bands. Band students, parents, guardians, and community members are invited to a meet-and-greet event with McNulty at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at the Melissa High School Band Hall.

With over two decades of experience in music education, McNulty brings a proven track record of leadership and excellence. Most recently, he led the Keller Central High School band program, where he directed the Wind Ensemble and Marching Band while overseeing the vertical alignment of the entire feeder pattern.

Under McNulty’s leadership, the Keller Central Wind Ensemble earned Division 1 ratings annually since 2009, advanced to the TMEA State Honor Band competition three times, and performed as a featured ensemble at the 2019 Music for All National Concert Festival. Likewise, the Keller Central Marching Band consistently received UIL Division 1 ratings, advanced to the UIL State Marching Contest, and was a consistent finalist at local Bands of America competitions.

Before his time at Keller Central, McNulty served as the Associate Director at Richland High School, where his ensembles earned UIL Sweepstakes for four consecutive years, claimed a UIL state championship, and became Bands of America Grand Nationals finalists. His jazz bands also won multiple first-place festival awards, showcasing his versatility and commitment to musical excellence.

McNulty holds a master’s degree from Southern Methodist University and a bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of North Texas. His vision and passion for music education promises to inspire Melissa ISD students and elevate the district’s band program to new heights.

McNulty shared both his passion and vision for the program, “My goal for the Mighty Cardinal Band will be to strive for excellence in everything we do, everyday! The standards we apply on ourselves and on our fellow band members will help nurture competitive success and also success within the community. I’m so excited to become a member of the Melissa community. I love that Melissa ISD values their deep roots in excellence.  The future's so bright for the Melissa band program.”

Director of Fine Arts, Jerry Whorton, shared his excitement, "We are thrilled to welcome Kevin McNulty to Team Melissa following a nationwide search. Kevin’s extensive knowledge and experience will elevate the student experience at Melissa Schools. His expertise will be key as we embrace the rapid growth and continue our tradition of excellence. I’m truly honored to pass the baton to Kevin."

“I had the privilege of observing the entire selection process, and I’m excited about the committee’s recommendation of Mr. McNulty. We look forward to the positive impact he will have on our band program and community, as well as the incredible contributions he will bring to our students and staff,” shared Superintendent of Melissa ISD, Keith Murphy. “On behalf of Team Melissa, I’d like to personally welcome Kevin and his family to Melissa.”

Melissa ISD looks forward to the bright future ahead for its band students under McNulty’s leadership. While Mr. McNulty will officially begin full-time in April, he is already working with the students and staff to ensure a smooth transition.
